At some point in our lives, we've all searched Google for symptoms we might have had and obviously freaked out when suddenly, Google listed us as a cause that could be cancer. We know, scary.
With the proliferation of artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT , experts are examining how reliable these chatbots can be for various questions.
Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) decided to evaluate how well ChatGPT answers fit 25 common questions about breast cancer prevention and screening.
"We found that ChatGPT answered questions correctly about 88% of the time, which is pretty amazing," said study corresponding author Dr. Paul Yi, Assistant Professor of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at UMSOM.
In February 2023, they sent each question to ChatGPT three times to see the answers. Three breast radiologists then evaluated these responses and found them to be appropriate for 22 of the 25 questions.
Experts are analyzing how ChatGPT provides cancer screening recommendations to be as accurate with answers as possible and as understandable as possible, although they say they should definitely go to the doctor for any symptoms.
