The scandal that erupted after Coldplay's concert in Boston continues to capture the attention of international media. The former CEO of the technology company Astronomer, Andy Byron, was filmed getting incredibly close to Kristin Cabot, the director of Human Resources at the same company, during the famous "kiss cam" moment at the concert. What made things even more heated was Chris Martin's spontaneous comment directly from the stage, who said "Either they're cheating, or they're just really shy."
Following public backlash and media pressure, Byron has resigned from his position as CEO, while Cabot has been suspended from work and a decision has not yet been made about her future at the company.
According to legal experts, Byron could try to sue Chris Martin or Coldplay for defamation, but that would be difficult to prove. To win such a lawsuit, he would have to show that Martin's comment was a false statement, made with intent to harm and with knowledge that it was untrue, which seems virtually impossible, especially since neither Byron nor Cabot have publicly denied that they were in a relationship outside of work.
Legal experts add that such a lawsuit would have no chance of success and would only serve to prolong the scandal in the media. Furthermore, there is no legal basis to sue the girl who published the video on TikTok, as concerts are public venues and tickets usually include conditions that allow organizers to use footage from the audience.
On the other hand, it is Kristin Cabot who could take legal action regarding the situation. Lawyers point out that she could potentially sue Byron for sexual harassment in the workplace, given that he was her superior and under American law, companies are liable for the actions of their managers.
Astronomer has issued a public statement condemning the behavior of both and stating that it expects high ethical standards from its leaders, while the internal investigation continues. What remains unclear is whether Byron received any financial package after resigning or whether he suffered significant economic losses. But one thing is certain, if he decides to sue Coldplay, he not only has little chance of winning, but risks facing another wave of public backlash.
