"The Whale" is a drama directed by Darren Aronofsky and tells the story of an obese man who works online as a literature teacher to provide income. Charlie, the main character, never shows himself on the laptop camera and, in fact, never leaves the house, so most of the events take place in his house, bringing scenes that evoke a multitude of feelings, from embarrassment to pity.
Charlie's mission is to rebuild the relationship with the daughter he abandoned many years ago and provide her with a better future. But the subject is filled with situations that keep the audience in suspense, pushing and pulling them towards events that take their breath away, to understand more about the soul of Charlie, who even though he is on the verge of death, still has a very positive approach to life, people's opinions and in general, even to insults.
In this film, Aronofsky challenges us to look beyond the existing idea of ??beauty and aesthetics, urging us to see beauty in Charlie's soft voice, in his favorite essay, in his warm smile, or to his poetic soul. At the same time it pushes Charlie towards bitter memories, regret and the challenges that obesity brings.
But the character is a "great and good giant", who demands all the time that people be honest, because only through honesty, a successful essay can be written.
Charlie spends most of his time on the sofa, visited by his nurse friend, a missionary of the apocalyptic church, and his daughter. Everyone communicates with him in different ways, sometimes treating him with hatred, with kindness, or even with mercy. All of them are also broken, traumatized people.
However, the fact that the film tells the story and feelings of an obese man is not meant to focus on his weight, instead, the focus of every viewer should be on the weight of guilt, love and hope. "I want to know that I have done something good in life", screams Charlie in one scene, and in fact, this cry constitutes the main message of the film.
