
Thousands of people protest in Berlin against giving arms to Ukraine

Thousands of people have taken part in a demonstration in central Berlin to protest against more arms being given to Ukraine, calling on the German government to pave the way for negotiations with Vladimir Putin. Police estimated there were 13,000 people at the Uprising for Peace, organized by Sahra Wagenknecht, a renegade member of the Links party, and feminist activist Alice Schwarzer. Organizers claimed around 50,000 attended. Similar demonstrations took place in other German cities.

The Minister of Justice says that 184 people were arrested during the expansion of the investigation, the death toll in Turkey and Syria has exceeded 50,000. Firefighters say body parts are found in the rubble every day.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says he wants to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to discuss Beijing's calls for a ceasefire and peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. China claims a neutral stance in the war that began a year ago, but has also refused to criticize Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, or even refer to it as an invasion. It has accused Ukraine's Western allies of provoking the conflict and "fanning the flames" by providing Ukraine with defensive weapons.
