Climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested along with other activists during a protest in Lutzerath, Germany, against the demolition of a village to make way for the expansion of a coal mine.
The area is being bulldozed to expand a lignite (dark brown type of coal) mine. Environmentalists say destroying the village to expand the mine would result in huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. The government argues that coal is necessary to guarantee Germany's energy security.
The Swedish activist addressed around 6,000 protesters who marched towards Luetzerath on Saturday, calling the mine expansion a "betrayal of present and future generations".
"Germany is one of the biggest polluters in the world and must be held responsible," she said.
Thunberg was released after the authorities carried out an identity check.
