It is now a fact: "Big Brother VIP" is the most popular program in Albania. The residents of the second edition of the famous house are among the most commented on, the most mentioned on social networks and among the most discussed on television programs. You may not have seen a single day of BBVA, but you've probably heard of the dramas inside the house (with Luiz's story at the top). Have you ever wondered why we love to watch "Big Brother"?
According to Dr. Jana Scrivani, an experienced clinical psychologist, one of the main psychological reasons we like to watch reality shows is empathy.
"Reality shows give us a false sense that we really know the people we see on screen. That is why it is called 'reality' [reality] because there is the relationship of having relationships with others, although we are aware that it is an exaggerated feeling." - she says.
According to the psychologist, "over time, we see people on the screen as friends. We identify with their struggles and triumphs.”
A program like "Big Brother", even more so in the VIP format where each of them, who less and who more has a number of people who appreciate them for their achievements (fans), is characterized by the tendency to create a connection between viewers and residents inside the house. Being watched all the time, sharing personal stories (family problems, violence, health, economic insecurities, conflicts) and dynamics inside and outside the game makes the residents to be "relatable" to the public.
According to Psychology Today, the less people are connected to others in their lives, the more they may love the drama of reality shows. However, this is not comprehensive, as many can become obsessed with "Big Brother VIP" and similar programs while having normal interpersonal relationships.
Dr. Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist and television consultant, says that another reason why people are interested in the events of reality shows is related to the fact that they live vicariously through experiences that they themselves would not want to experience.
"We live vicariously through their stories, safe from our couch at home. We don't have to risk our feelings and reputation by living through the experiences of reality show participants," she says.
Humans are quite complex creatures. Sometimes we are interested not only in those we love, but often also in those we do not like.
