Do you have to urinate if you have a tampon in?

There are many guidelines to remember when using tampons - don't keep them in for too long, remove them before you have sex, and make sure there's only one on at a time. But there are also some things about using a tampon that no one talks about - like peeing with a tampon inside.

It may seem like an awkward question, but you're not alone in asking it, and it's important to know the answer. Below, dr. Cindy Duke, a fertility specialist and virologist breaks down everything you need to know about tampon urination.

So can you pee with a tampon?

Yes, you can pee with a tampon.

"There are no health concerns associated with urinating with a tampon inserted," confirms Dr. Duke.

Here's a quick anatomy lesson: Period blood and urine come out of two different holes. You insert the tampon into the vagina, while the urine comes out of the urethra - the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of our body. The urethra is a small opening near the top of your vulva, and the vaginal opening is just below that. So when a tampon is inserted, it does not interfere with the flow of urine at all.

But there is one important thing to remember: Always clean from front to back after urinating, whether you have a tampon or not, to prevent or avoid the passage of live bacteria from the anus or vagina to the urinary tract (or urethra )

Is it sanitary to pee with a tampon?

It's okay and perfectly safe to pee with a tampon.

However, if you don't like the wet feel, try to keep the cord away when you urinate so it doesn't get wet. Or, you can change your tampon every time you go to the bathroom if you want.
