Brooke Shields wishes she hadn't been so candid about her private life in the mid-'80s.
Once called "the most famous virgin in the world", the "Blue Lagoon" star now feels that she should not have publicly revealed her virginity status when she was 20 years old.
"I think, in retrospect, it was a bit of a mistake that I was so open about my virginity, because it never left me alone," she told the "Noah What? With Brooke Shields" podcast on Tuesday.
Shields, now 57, first spoke about virginity in her 1985 book, On Your Oën, which offered health and beauty advice to college girls.
The A Castle for Christmas star clarified that despite being credited with the book, it was actually written by a ghostwriter* after the publisher rejected her first chapter.
"I was getting a lot of messages from girls saying, 'Oh, my boyfriend is pressuring me and I don't want to have sex. What should I do?' My take was, 'You don't have to do anything you don't want to do,'” Shields recalled.
Despite her best efforts to help young women, she ended up facing "boring" questions from men for years to come.
"I became the most famous virgin in the world. But I gained a resilience and it made me ready for anything in this industry, which can be difficult," she said.
Shields lost her virginity to her Princeton boyfriend, Dean Cain, when she was 22. Apparently, the actress has spared nothing in terms of her sex life...
