The gift was given to him by Father Ji, Sichko, who visited the Vatican and, of course, could not leave without giving the Pope a gift. He shared the news on Twitter and received hundreds of positive comments about his brilliant idea.

The Pope smiled, but clearly looked confused (necessarily) when he picked up the yellow Nike sneakers.
