For the first time in 15 years, a weekend break in Western Europe is cheaper than in Eastern cities, according to an analysis of 20 top tourist destinations.
Athens and Lisbon offer the best value for autumn holidays – specifically for short weekend trips – according to an annual report from Post Office Travel Money.
Weekend breaks in Athens now cost an average of €240 – 15% less than last year and half the cost of Paris, where prices have risen by 25%.
Although average hotel prices have risen significantly in Lisbon - from €43/night in September 2021 to €67/now - the Portuguese city ranked second.
Krakow, Riga, Budapest and Prague come next, followed by Madrid, Berlin, Dubrovnik and Rome. This is the first time that Madrid, Berlin and Rome appear in the top 10.
