A team of investigators claim to have unmasked an undercover spy from Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU, who spent a decade posing as a Latin American jewelry designer and even partied with NATO staff in Naples.
Investigators say the woman introduced herself as Maria Adela Kuhfeldt Rivera and told people she met that she was the child of a German father and Peruvian mother, born in the city of Callao, Peru. In fact, she is a GRU career coach, according to a study by Bellingcat in partnership with a number of media outlets, including La Repubblica in Italy and Der Spiegel in Germany.
"Rivera" was what the intelligence community calls an illegal agent, trained to pose as a foreigner. Moscow's intelligence agencies have used illegals since the early Soviet period. Sometimes, they stay living in their false identities for decades.
Billing herself as "Rivera", she lived between Rome, Malta and Paris and eventually moved to Naples, home of NATO's Joint Allied Forces Command, around 2013. She set up a jewelery boutique called Serein and had an active social life.
Acquaintances said that by taking the role of secretary at Lions Clubs International in the Naples branch, she was able to make friends with many NATO staff and other members. A NATO employee told investigators that he had a brief romantic relationship with Rivera.
Traditionally, it has been incredibly difficult to detect such people, but in a world of biometric data, facial recognition software and investigative capabilities, it has become harder for Russia to keep illegals under the radar.

Disa ilegalë të GRU udhëtojnë jashtë vendit vetëm për misione të shpejta, afatshkurtra dhe ndryshojnë identitetin rregullisht, ndërsa të tjerë si "Rivera" kalojnë vite duke banuar në të njëjtin identitet të fshehur.

Many people who have met "Kuhfeldt Rivera" said she told them that her Peruvian mother had taken her to the Soviet Union in 1980 and left her there.
Bellingcat said it had identified the real Russian woman behind the fake "Rivera" persona, based on information and photo matches from various databases and other research.
