There is a lot of misinformation about skin care and popular treatments are often not endorsed by dermatologists.
1. Steam facial cleansing
Shirley Chi, board certified dermatologist, says that "the one skin care practice I would never do is steam cleaning."
"I have rosacea and my skin is sensitive. Steaming your face opens up the pores and allows more irritants to get in. It also increases inflammation in the skin. This, in turn, increases redness and worsens conditions like acne and rosacea."
Meanwhile, I would always do procedures like microdermabrasion or microneedling to improve skin texture and tone.
2. Permanent fillers
Ranella Hirsch and in fact every other dermatologist - would never try permanent fillers like silicone or others.
While no procedure is completely risk-free, those of temporary fillers tend to be more temporary and often reversible.
3. Solar
This should come as no surprise, but in case you need to refresh your memory, tanning beds use ultraviolet light that is very harmful to the skin. Skin damage can lead to skin cancer or melanoma.
Indoor tanning before age 35 is associated with a 75% increased risk of melanoma.
