Prosecutors in Spain will ask a court to sentence the Colombian star to eight years and two months in prison if she is convicted at trial.
Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is accused of failing to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros in taxes between 2012 and 2014. Prosecutors said Friday they would also seek a 24 million euro fine.
The indictment details six charges against Shakira. The singer this week rejected a deal offered by prosecutors, opting to go to trial, the date of which has not yet been set. Shakira's team says the singer has always met her tax obligations.
Shakira has previously claimed that in the years 2012-2014 she was a resident of the Bahamas, while the court says that she has documents that she was a resident of Spain. Prosecutors in Barcelona have claimed she spent more than half of each year between 2012 and 2014 in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country.
