Europe at the "epicenter" of the monkey pox outbreak, says WHO

Europe remains at the "epicenter" of a worldwide monkey pox outbreak, the World Health Organization's European regional office said on Wednesday.

There are 25 countries in the region that have reported more than 1,500 cases - 85% of the global total, they said. "The magnitude of this outbreak is a real danger; the longer the virus circulates, the more it will spread and the stronger the disease base in non-endemic countries will become," said Hans, regional director for Europe. Kluge.

He urged patients with suspected or confirmed cases to be isolated until they no longer have symptoms. Kluge called against the stigmatization of certain populations, saying the virus was not "affiliated with any specific group".

"Mass vaccination is not recommended or needed at this time."

The World Health Organization has called the worldwide outbreak "unusual and disturbing." WHO experts will decide next week whether to declare the disease a global health emergency.
