
The first Russian soldier goes on trial in Ukraine for war crimes

A Russian soldier has appeared in court accused of killing an unarmed man on a bicycle. This is the first war crimes trial in Ukraine since Vladimir Putin invaded the country.
21-year-old Vadim Shyrimarin is accused of the premeditated murder of a 62-year-old, who was not made known in court. Shysimarin is being held in custody. The case is scheduled to resume on Wednesday. Shysimarin's lawyer said his client had admitted to killing the victim, but had not yet discussed whether he would plead guilty.
North Korea: Kim Jong-un declares Covid blast a "major disaster"

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has declared the first Covid-19 blast in the country a "major disaster" after reporting 21 more deaths. State media said 174,440 reported having a fever on Friday alone as the country tries to slow the spread of Covid-19 in the unvaccinated population. State media did not say specifically how many of the cases of people with fever and deaths were confirmed as Covid-19 cases.

Georgia's separatist region of South Ossetia will hold a referendum on joining Russia on July 17, the region's leader announced on Friday.
