North Korea acknowledges Covid blast for first time, declares "grave national emergency"
North Korea has declared a "grave national emergency" after confirming the first Covid-19 explosion, prompting its leader, Kim Jong-un, to pledge to eliminate the virus quickly.
State media reported that a sub-variant of the highly transmitted virus, Omicron, known as BA.2, had been discovered in the capital, Pyongyang. North Korea has claimed it has not registered a single case of Covid-19 since it closed its borders at the start of the pandemic more than two years ago.
The discovery of the Omicron variant poses a potentially serious threat to North Korea, which has not vaccinated any of its 25 million people, according to experts, and its healthcare system may find it impossible to withstand a major outbreak of the virus.
