The American Civil Liberties Union (UALC) helped Amber Heard write the Washington Post article accusing Johnny Depp of abuse after the human rights organization was promised a $ 3.5 million donation from her divorce. However, at least $ 500,000 was given to him by an Elon Musk fund.
UALC general counsel Terence Dougherty testified that the organization decided to nominate Amber Heard as ambassador after she promised a substantial donation for 10 years.
"Ms. Heard spoke so clearly and expertly on gender-based violence issues that [UALC representatives] decided she would be the right person to ask her to become an ambassador," Dougherty testified.
But out of the $ 1.3 million portion of the donation that was supposed to come from Heard, $ 100,000 came directly from her ex-husband Depp, and, based on an email from Elon Musk, the court was told the $ 500,000 came from a fund affiliated with Elon Musk, which was registered as a donation by Heard.
Only $ 350,000 was provided from accounts directly controlled by Heard, while another $ 350,000 came from an anonymous donor. "We did not receive any money in 2019 and beyond," Dougherty added.
As part of the relationship UALC established with Amber Heard, the group later agreed to draft the Washington Post article in 2018, in which Heard said she was "a public figure representing domestic abuse," writing which is in the center of Johnny Depp slander lawsuit against his ex-wife.
"Based on my review of the article drafts, I knew she was referring to Johnny Depp and her marriage," Dougherty said during the video before the jury.
The UALC's communications team tried to contain Heard's "strong anger" over the issue, but UALC's internal emails, including drafts and changes to the article, reflect the organization's concerns that references to domestic abuse may violate the terms of the divorce agreement.
