
Last quarter, the number of subscribers to Netflix went from 221.8 million to 221.6 million.
The platform's share price initially fell by close to 20% after reporting it had lost 200,000 subscribers globally during the first quarter. Netflix expects to lose 2 million global subscribers in the current quarter.
Netflix executives said they were now open to adding ads in exchange for a lower-priced subscription. Netflix co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings has long been opposed to adding ads or other in-service promotions.
The company cited a number of factors for the decline in subscribers, including increased competition, the economy, the war in Ukraine, and the large number of people sharing their Netflix accounts with other non-paying people.
In late March, Netflix announced that it was planning not to allow passwords to be shared outside of a single family. Persons who choose to provide passwords outside the family will be charged extra. Testing for the distribution of paid passwords will initially be done for people in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.
