People who criticize Will Smith's action at the 2022 Oscars - after he shot comedian Chris Rock commenting on Will's wife's shaved hair - are of the opinion that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should not have given him the award for "Best Actor" or must take it away now.
Has the Academy taken disciplinary action before?
In 2017, the Academy fired producer Harvey Weinstein at the height of his sexual behavior scandals. A code of conduct was adopted in 2017, which states: "There is no place in the Academy for people who abuse their status, power or influence in a way that violates known standards of conduct."
Following the new code, Roman Polanski, who was convicted of rape and sex with a minor, was removed from membership. So it was with Bill Cosby, who spent more than two years in prison convicted of sexual assault, but his charges were overturned last year.
It should be noted, however, that Polanski - who won "The Best Director" for "The Pianist" in 2003, almost 30 years after being convicted of rape - was not stripped of his Oscar.
Nor has Weinstein returned the 81 Oscars collected by Miramax and The Weinstein Company. He also did not return the award he received for his role as a producer on "Shakespeare in Love" which won the "Best Picture" award in 1999.
Whoopi Goldberg, actress and member of the Academy said during the show "The View": "We will not take away that Oscar. "I'm sure there will be consequences, but I do not think they will."
The academy has stated that disciplinary action against the actor may include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.
