A new pill for men has proven 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, after tests performed on rats. This new drug can strike a balance when it comes to contraceptives, where there are far fewer options available to men.
During their next meeting at the American Chemical Society, scientists announced the creation of a new non-hormonal contraceptive pill for men that effectively prevents pregnancy with no obvious side effects.
While women can take measures in various forms to prevent a pregnancy, for men the only option so far has been the condom.
For decades, scientists have tried to develop an oral contraceptive for men, but such a thing does not yet exist in pharmacies.
"We wanted to create and develop a non-hormonal contraceptive for men, to avoid all the side effects," said Dr. Noman, a graduate of the University of Minnesota.
The team hopes that clinical trials in humans will begin in the second half of this year, as it is difficult to predict whether an ingredient that looks good in animal tests will turn out the same in humans, so experts are currently testing other ingredients.
