Couvade Syndrome is a much-discussed condition for couples who are expected to become parents. The term from the French word "couvee" meaning "to be born" or "to bloom" and was first noticed by anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor in 1865. In other words, this term has existed for a long time.
Tylor observed men in primitive communities and noticed that they mimicked partner pain during childbirth or even breastfeeding after childbirth. More research found that men had similar symptoms to their pregnant partner. Tylor attributed these symptoms to empathy or compassion, which is "the physical response to the anxiety of others."
The symptoms of Couvade syndrome can be divided depending on the nature, psychological or physical. Psychological symptoms may include: anxiety, depression, sleep problems, anxiety, decreased sexual desire, etc. Physical symptoms may include: vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain or bloating, changes in appetite, leg cramps, back pain, etc.
Interestingly, the symptoms of Couvade syndrome may disappear during the second trimester, which also tends to happen to pregnant women.
Why does it happen? The condition has been studied extensively by anthropologists and sociologists, but it is not known for sure why it occurs. Scholars mostly support the idea that it is related to empathy towards the partner.
