Japan imposes sanctions on 17 other Russians in response to attack on Ukraine
The Japanese Ministry of Finance announced that it has decided to freeze the assets of 17 other Russians. The next target to be sanctioned are: Russian billionaire Yuri Kovalchuk and members of his family, Russian lawmaker and oligarch Viktor Vekselberg.
This decision brings to 61 the number of Russians targeted by Japan to freeze their assets there.
UN chief raises alarm: "Nuclear conflict more likely than ever"
Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, on Monday sounded the alarm about raising the level of readiness by Russia for its nuclear forces after the invasion of Ukraine.
"Raising the level of readiness of the Russian nuclear forces is a chilling development. The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unimaginable, has now turned into something possible. "It's time to end the horror of the people of Ukraine and to embark on the path of diplomacy and peace."
In late February, President Putin said nuclear forces would be put on high alert, adding to fears that a Russian attack on Ukraine could lead to nuclear war.
U.S. officials have said they have seen no reason so far to change Washington's nuclear alert levels.
