Can birth anatomy affect sexuality? "If you were born with a penis or vulva it will definitely have some effect on how sex is experienced," says Justin Lehmiller, a social psychologist and researcher at the Kinsey Institute and author of Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How You Can 'help you improve your sex life'.
Why? Because the way you have sex, the way you reach orgasm, will change. "We know, for example, that people born with a vulva are more likely to experience successive orgasms than people with a penis," he says.
It should be mentioned that the specific culture, religion and society where you grew up dictate messages and usually boys are taught that masturbation is normal and that sex with as many people as possible makes them more capable. Meanwhile, girls are often taught that masturbation is wrong and sex should happen in marriage.
However orgasms are usually similar for most genders. The way men and women describe orgasm, according to research, shows that both sexes have given similar answers. Common descriptions include:
- pleasant pleasure
- excitement
- calming
- emotional intimacy
- redness, throbbing sensation
