The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the Omicron variant should not be described as "easy" or "mild" at a time of "case tsunamis" that are overloading health systems around the world.
"Last week, the largest number of Covid cases so far in the pandemic were reported," Dr. told reporters. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a press conference.
All data reported an increase in the number of Covid-19 infections with the largest increase (100%) observed in America, followed by Southeast Asia (78%) and Europe (65%).
Dr. Tedros warned that while Omicron appears to be less severe than the Delta variant, especially for those who have been vaccinated, this does not mean it should be categorized as "light".
"Like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalizing people and killing people," he stressed.
