Germany optimistic about Omicron; Europe reduces activities for the New Year
The leading German coronavirus expert has expressed optimism that his country could have a "relatively normal" winter in 2022, while many European countries reduced New Year's activities.
The highly transmissible variant Omicron has spurred an increase in Covid infections across the continent and many governments have restricted mass public gatherings and closed or decided to block nightclubs.
But Christian Drosten, who heads the Institute of Cirology at Berlin's Charité Hospital, said Friday that data from other countries suggest that Omicron infections were milder and could lead to a "pandemic situation" comparable to a common cold or flu virus.
