Every year, December 1 is remembered as World AIDS Day around the world and aims to disseminate as much information as possible and raise awareness of people against this disease. The first case of HIV was discovered in 1988 and today, in 2021, the theme of this December 1 is: "End inequalities, end AIDS".
What is HIV?
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes an infection that can cause immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS. AIDS consists of a weakening of the immune system that can lead to fatal infections and cancer.
How is HIV transmitted?
HIV can be transmitted from body fluids, from the blood of an infected person, from breast milk, but not through saliva. HIV is thought to be transmitted more through unprotected anal and vaginal sex. Practicing safe sex can protect you from HIV and SST.
Is there a cure for HIV?
There is still no cure for HIV, but advances in medicine over the last 30 years offer the opportunity to have an unlimited life. Treatments for HIV and AIDS reduce the amount of HIV in the body and strengthen the immune system. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) involves the combination of daily medications to prevent the virus from spreading. They can not "kill" the virus, but can prevent the spread of AIDS. A combination of medications is used because the virus can adapt and become resistant to certain treatments.
