The efficacy of a new nasal spray that can prevent the spread of Covid-19 has long been tested in a UK clinic.
Researchers, who have spent a year testing the sprayer, created by Raphael Labs, a company founded by scientists from universities around the world, hope it can either stop or treat the virus, regardless of the type.
The nasal spray works as a prophylactic and not a vaccine; the idea is that it is used as a preventive measure against the virus.
"For the virus to enter the cell, it must undergo some very specific chemical reactions," Rakesh Uppal, chairman of Raphael Labs and professor of Cardiovascular Surgery in Barts, London, told Euronews. "We have been able to find a way to manipulate that chemical reaction and therefore stop the virus from entering."
Named pHOXWELL, the sprayer works in a completely different way from vaccines. Uppal says it's more like a barrier than a vaccine.
At the moment, the ingredients have not been published and their research is expected to be reviewed by experts in the field.
