The creator of Netflix's most commented series "Squid Game" said that Donald Trump's presidency was one of the influences that prompted the series' release.
South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk, said he conceived the ideas for the series in 2008 during the global financial crisis. At the time, there was not much interest in the strange premise of "Squid Game," he told IndWire.
Then began the cryptocurrency boom, the rise of tech giants and the Trump presidency. With these major global developments over the past 10 years and changes in how the show can be delivered to the audience, Dong-hyuk said he felt it was finally the right time.
"I think he looks like one of the VIPs in the game," he told Trump. "After all these things happened, I thought it was time for this show to be presented to the world."
The VIP characters in the series are super-rich anonymous people watching and betting on the race, in which hundreds of debt-ridden and troubled people play deadly versions of children's games for money. Players are killed when eliminated from the race.
