Doctors in Lithuania have removed more than a kilogram of nails and screws from the stomach of a man who began swallowing metal objects after quitting alcohol.
The man, who was not identified for reasons of patient confidentiality, was hospitalized in the town of Klaipeda with severe abdominal pain.
An X-ray examination showed pieces of metal where some were up to 10 centimeters.
"During the three-hour X-ray control operation, all foreign bodies, even the smallest, in the patient's stomach were removed," said surgeon Sarunas Dailidenas.
"We have never seen anything like this," Algirdas Slepavicius, chief surgeon at Klaipeda Hospital, told local media.
The doctor said the man had started swallowing metal objects last month after he stopped drinking. The patient was in stable condition after surgery, he added.
