Singer R Kelly was found guilty of running a criminal scheme that took children and women and exposed them to unwanted sex and mental torture. Some of the key moments of his trial are:
A former Kelly tour manager told the court he gave a $ 500 bribe to a government employee to give singer Aaliyah a fake ID so Kelly could marry him when she was 15 years old.
Demetrius Smith said he had paid an employee at a welfare office in Chicago to produce the ID so that Kelly could marry Aaliyah after he had sex with her and believed she had become pregnant. Kelly was 27 at the time.
One witness claimed she had seen Kelly sexually abusing Aaliyah in 1993, when Aaliyah was 13 or 14 years old. Prosecutors said Kelly wanted to use the marriage to protect herself from criminal charges related to having sex with a minor and prevent her from testifying against him.
Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 22.
Jerhonda Pace, one of the main accusers, described that he strangled her and left her unconscious after breaking "Rob's rules", according to which Kelly checked when she ate, what she wore and if she could use the toilet.
Pace said he was 16 when he first had sex with Kelly in 2009 after telling her she was older. When later real age, he continued the relationship until 2010.
Pace, who was interviewed for the documentary "Lifetime Surviving R Kelly" in 2019, said that he physically abused her on many occasions during the relationship.
A witness said Kelly had beaten her with a shoe and intentionally infected her with herpes.
The woman, identified only as "Jane Doe," said she was 17 when the abuse occurred in 2015. She said she met Kelly while he was performing on a tour. She wanted to be a singer and lied about age, saying she was 18 years old.
The witness said she had no romantic interest in Kelly but wanted his contribution to her career.
The first sign of trouble, she said, occurred when Kelly offered her an audition, but said he had to ejaculate before it happened. The witness said they started having sex regularly and Kelly almost always filmed the meetings.
