In October of a year ago, something troubling was reported about Covidin - Prolonged Covidine, a term referring to the post-Covid consequences. But what are the symptoms and who are the most at risk?
Prolonged Covid is thought to expect up to 5% of outpatients and up to 80% of inpatients. A study led by the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services estimated 366 people aged 18 and older who tested positive for Covid-19 between April 1 and December 10, 2020. Patients were then interviewed at least 2 months after the positive test. .
One-third of patients reported at least 1 symptom 2 months after infection. The most common symptoms included fatigue, difficulty breathing, and parosmia (loss of smell).
The possibility of symptoms was greater in women, people 40 years and older and people with existing health problems.
What causes long Covidi? Researchers suspect a variety of factors, though it is unclear why some groups have a greater chance of developing long Covid.
"There may be persistent SARS-CoV-2 virus (cause of Covid-19), or maybe not the whole virus, but part of it, somewhere in the body despite recovery from acute infection (and even negative Covid-19 testing) ) and this virus keeps the immune system active, ”Dr. Albert Shaw, an infectious disease specialist at Yale Medicine, told Healthline.
Another theory is that when it fights the coronavirus, the immune system also generates "autoantibodies" which fight normal proteins in the body.
