After a year of absence and amid much debate recently due to fears of Covid spreading, the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics officially kicked off with fireworks in an almost empty stadium, lacking the usual crowd energy.

"Today is a moment of hope. Yes, it is very different from what we had imagined. But let’s appreciate this moment, because we are all finally here together. This sense of unity - this is the light at the end of the dark tunnel of the pandemic. " - said the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach.
