Our body's response to sex is not something static. It can depend on a variety of variables, from feeling hurt after a workout to emotional connection to your partner, and yes, even at the stage of your menstrual cycle. But if you experience painful sex after menstruation, you are not alone.
Pain during sex after periods is quite common for several reasons. First, your menstrual cycle is particularly "soft" in the days immediately following the cycle. This means that you may be more sensitive to the physical sensations of sex, be it pleasure or pain.
While there is no evidence to suggest that it is normal to experience any kind of severe pain from sex even after periods, some mild discomfort is quite normal.
Some people experience vaginal dryness after periods, which is sometimes attributed to the completely unfounded myth that tampons absorb all the natural moisture from inside the vagina. While the job of a tampon is to suck blood, there is no indication that tampon use is associated with vaginal dryness. If you have trouble getting wet, there are many other "culprits" to consider - including estrogen levels. Dryness in the days after menstruation may be related to a drop in estrogen that affects the overall moisture level of the vagina. Dryness during sex creates friction, which can be uncomfortable, or even very painful.
In any case, talk to a gynecologist and communicate with your partner!
