A painting by icon David Bowie is expected to sell for thousands of dollars at an online art auction while purchased at a donation center at a landfill in Ontario, Canada.
The portrait, titled "DHead XLVI," is part of a series of roughly 47 works that Bowie created between 1995 and 1997, according to Rob Cowley, president of Cowley Abbott, who is managing the auction.
The painting has Bowie's distinctive signature on the back of the canvas, along with a label bearing his name, dated 1997, and a description of the painting as "acrylic and computer collage on fabric".
Cowley told CNN that the seller, who has not been identified, paid C $ 5 for the painting last summer at a donation center at a landfill.
The person is not an art collector and just liked paintings, Cowley said. Cowley added that Bowie painted friends, family and other musicians for the DHead series, and even made some self-portraits.
"In this case, even the gender is difficult to distinguish because it has no facial features other than the side profile. It is a pretty great portrait, but it is very difficult to say exactly who it might be."
According to CNN, the painting was expected to sell there for $ 10,000, but surpassed the price on the first day of the auction, which ends June 24.
