The new Barbie doll line is made of plastic that if not used for dolls, would remain as garbage in the ocean. The "Barbie Loves the Ocean" collection, which has a summer theme, comes with three dolls and other additional elements. The toy company is merging with the plastic recycling company Envision Plastics.
"Our sustainability efforts represent the next step in Barbie's mission and social evolution," Lisa McKnight, Barbie and Dolls's global portfolio manager, told CNN Business. "We are doing our part in protecting the planet and promoting good behavior, which will probably serve as an example for the generations that will use these dolls."
Each doll in the "Barbie Loves the Ocean" set costs $ 10, while sets with other toys go up to $ 20. As part of the Barbie vlog series on YouTube, the company will also feature new dolls with a video called: "Barbie Shares How Can All Protect the Planet" (Barbie shows how we can protect the entire planet ).
The 76-year-old toy company previously pledged to use 100% recycled or recyclable plastic materials in all its products and packaging by 2030. In May, she also announced her new initiative, which encourages consumers to bring their old toys so that the company can reuse them for future products.
The pandemic created a sudden increase in demand for toys as parents joined the children at home. Many large toy companies are trying to become more eco-friendly after decades of use in destructive environmental plastics in their products and packaging. Finding alternatives to plastics is essential to tackling climate change, and the adoption of "eco-friendly" marketing and products is important to companies as consumers are increasingly aware of how their choices affect plans.
