This effect on TikTok is making people lose self-confidence

Since gaining popularity during the pandemic, people at TikTok have been the initiators of many trends, some of them related to boosting self-confidence and changing concepts towards body image. Yet a trend lately, though launched for fun, seems to be lowering people’s self-esteem.

It is the "inverted" filter that turns the photo / video showing how others see you. It's not a new filter, but it is gaining popularity lately. Through this filter, people see if their faces are symmetrical (because they are likely to consider it a standard of beauty).

"It's quite a privilege to do this trend without having to burst into tears," one TikTok girl wrote. "This effect has seriously damaged my self-esteem," reads a Twitter post.

The reason that affects the image we have of ourselves is the fact that this filter makes people look "weird" and by "weird" we mean that they see an image that is not very familiar to them.

Simply put, when you look in the mirror, you see another version of your face. This is because the faces are not symmetrical. When you see yourself with the inverted filter, see a version of yours where the features are not as you are used to seeing them every day.
