Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are facing criticism for their new partnership with a company that sells whitening creams.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced last week that they have joined forces with Procter & Gamble, which sells a controversial cream, the Mirror reported.
"Meghan has talked a lot about the issue of racism, so it makes no sense," said Alex Malouf, a former director of Procter & Gamble.
The brand sells White Radiance moisturizer in India, Malaysia and Singapore. Skin whitening creams are advertised for their ability to reduce the concentration or production of melanin, which gives the skin the pigment it has. Critics have called for similar products to be removed from the shelves, saying they are inherently racist.
Nina Davuluri, who was the first Indian-American to win Miss America, argued that the creams promote a "racist" ideology that shows that "you need white skin to be beautiful, you need white skin to be successful."
Joanne Rondilla, professor, added that the Harry-Meghan couple had a "responsibility" to address concerns about the product and the company.
"Like everyone else in the world, I saw Meghan's interview with Oprah. What she said about racism was important, but I do not think this partnership supports the conversation she had."
