How much do you know about babies? Fare? Too much? However, we doubt you know these facts.
- Their first stool does not smell bad: A baby's first stool consists of mucus, fluid from the mother's womb and everything else that is digested while they are inside the mother's womb. But they do not yet have bacteria in the gut, responsible for the odor. Once children are fed, the bacteria will colonize the intestines.
- Some babies stop breathing: It is likely that when they are asleep, they may not breathe for 5 to 10 seconds. Irregular breathing is normal. But if the baby stops breathing for a longer time or turns blue, it is a medical emergency.
- Their tonsils have taste sensors: Although a baby has approximately the same number of taste sensors as children and adults, they cover more areas, including the tonsils and the back of the throat. A newborn may feel the sweet, bitter and sour taste, but not salty (up to about 5 months). When they start consuming more food, they are more likely to like the same things the mother ate during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- They cry without tears, at first: Baby tears do not appear without being 1 month old.
- Newborns have breasts: Both boys and girls may look like they have small breasts. They may even have milk leaks. The breast is formed because babies absorb estrogen from the mother and it disappears within a few weeks.
- Sleep to the right: Only 15% of newborns prefer to turn their head to the left when lying on their back. It is thought to be related to a gene.
- Boys may have erections: It often happens just before urinating. It is not known exactly why, but it is nothing to worry or ashamed of. It can even be seen on ultrasound, before they are born.
- They can scare themselves: It does not take much effort to scare a newborn: a loud noise, bright light, sudden movement, etc. In addition, babies may be frightened by their movements, such as when they move their arms.
