The coronavirus pandemic, which causes Covid disease, has been in the spotlight of health authorities for more than a year, but on the other hand, for decades a troubling disease has been affecting millions of people, far more than Covid: Diabetes.
Diabetes as a pandemic, in the second sense of the word (a phenomenon that spreads rapidly to a large number of people, not a contagious disease) affects people all over the world. The World Health Organization estimates that diabetes affects 422 million (1 in 11 adults) worldwide; thus three times more people than the coronavirus.
"Diabetes" is already a complete epidemic of such dynamics that the number of people with diabetes has almost quadrupled in the last 30 years, "Dr. told Euronews. Gojka Roglic, medical expert on diabetes management at the World Health Organization. Diabetes deaths increased by 70% worldwide between 2000 and 2019, with an 80% increase in male deaths. In Europe, 60 million adults have diabetes (1 in 10 Europeans), which is expected to rise to 69 million by 2045.
Diabetes not only increases the risk of premature death, but can also cause stroke, blindness, heart attacks, kidney failure and amputation.
On April 14, the same day that insulin was discovered 100 years ago, the WHO will open a diabetes agenda called the Global Diabetes Compact, which will support countries in implementing programs, focus on reducing overweight and aims to improve access to medicines and technology, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
