As the number of people vaccinated is increasing, there are still questions that are being asked about filler injections and the effect they have on the vaccine.
Although botox, fillers and other aesthetic treatments flourished during the pandemic, dermatologists are just as busy this time because people are looking for answers.
Studies have found very few people who had fillers and experienced some reactions after taking the vaccine, such as swelling (some had swelling at the site where they applied the filler, lip, cheeks), while others had swelling in other areas of the face. These side effects usually occurred within 24 to 48 hours of receiving the vaccine. For botox, there have been no reports of possible reactions.
However, according to, dr. Roxanne Graëe, plastic surgeon, Thursday is simply a sign that your body is responding to the vaccine.
Certified dermatologist, dr. Adardh Vijay says that vaccines against Covid have caused inflammatory reactions in a "very small subset" of people with fillers.
The reason according to him? Vaccines are definitely so new, so the more people get it the more reactions we will see, but Thursday has not been a serious reaction and has not caused any lasting effect, according to people who have experienced it.
Another explanation, by dr. Graëe is also this:
"Usually fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, which attracts water. "If you have some kind of rash and your body is trying to fight something, even if it is a sinus infection, you tend to swell a little where you have fillers because hyaluronic acid is drawing water."
Finally, should people who have applied fillers be vaccinated?
So far, all the dermatologists interviewed say with conviction that you can make the vaccine, even if you have fillers.
Dr. Shirley Chi, recommends waiting at least a month after the second dose of the vaccine, to put the filler back on.
