A year after Covid-19 was declared a pandemic, the world will have to be well prepared for another pandemic - This is the warning from BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin, the researcher behind one of the first approved coronavirus vaccines. And while the virus still narrows most of daily life around the world, Sahin says Covid-19 is not even the worst outbreak imaginable. In fact, future pandemics could be more devastating, and being prepared is essential, he said in an interview.
The goal should be for drug manufacturers and governments to have the production capacity to immunize the entire world within three months of dosing, Sahin said. Given the state of current vaccine campaigns, with large groups of the global population still waiting for doses, this is an ambitious target.
"We were not prepared to produce enough doses for the entire population on this planet," Sahin told the current campaign. "It simply came to our notice then. "We need to be prepared not only to develop a rapid vaccine but also to produce sufficient doses."
