When did it start?
Although recognized by the United Nations in 1977, Women's Day has its origins in the early 20th century, when labor protests began in North America and Europe. During World War I, members of the women’s movement in Russia celebrated First Women’s Day on March 8, 1913 to protest the war. A year later, on the same date, women across Europe rallied in solidarity rallies.
After World War II, almost all states began to use March 8 as Women's Rights Day. More than a century later, on March 8, endless events and marches are held to celebrate the achievements of women and to fight for equality.
What happens today?
For this year, the theme of International Women's Day is #ChooseToChallenge which seeks to encourage women to get involved in challenges as change comes from them.
