A Columbia University professor is discussing the legalization of all drugs, as he believes it is a fundamental right for responsible adults to choose what they put in their bodies.
Dr. Carl Hart recently received attention with the publication of his book: "Drug Use for Grown-ups: Chasing Liberty in the Land of Fear", in which he pursues freedom in the land of fear. he discusses his heroin use, comparing it to his alcohol consumption.
The author and professor of psychology argues that "drugs should be legalized, based on decades spent researching psychoactive drugs and their effects on humans."
"We have failed to educate people about drugs because of the stigma associated with them." @Columbia Professor @drcarlhart , a drugs expert who also recreationally uses narcotics, argues in favor of regulating drugs saying it would enable us to enhance their safety #Newsnight pic.twitter.com/EzYmMkJbp0

Hart presented a constitutional argument during an interview with Fox News, commenting:
"It's the original American promise."
He referred to the Declaration of Independence while continuing:
"We consider these truths to be self-evident, that all human beings have been created equal, that they have been endowed by their Creator with some inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
In 1986, James Baldwin concluded:

"If you want to get to the heart of the dope problem, legalize it. [Prohibition is] a law, in operation, that can only be used against the poor."

Hart further links the Declaration of Independence to drug use, explaining that he wrote his book to "present a more realistic image of the typical drug user: a responsible professional who happens to use drugs in his pursuit of happiness." .
The professor adds:
"I also wanted to remind the public that no benevolent government should stop autonomous adults from changing their consciousness, as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others."
Speaking to Fox News, Hart noted that there are other aspects of daily life that are dangerous, and yet not criminal.
He commented:
While some have criticized drug use and its legalization statements, Hart simply encourages people to read the book in order to fully understand his convictions, noting that "the arguments used have taken a long time."
