Wearing a tight surgical mask, or doubling the mask, could significantly reduce the transmission of Covid-19 and slow the spread of new, more transmissible strains, according to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). .
The researchers found that if two people wear both surgical masks or if both wear fabric masks over a surgical mask, the exposure to viral particles decreases by more than 95%.
"The data in this report underscore the finding that good fit can increase the overall effectiveness of the mask," the authors write (via WebMD). "Numerous simple ways to improve fit have been demonstrated to be effective."
Through a simulated breathing experiment, it was concluded that wearing a cloth mask over a surgical mask increases protection for the person wearing the mask, blocking 83% of small particles.
