Inspector Varnike was on duty during the Christmas holidays and on the morning of December 25 he received a phone call.

Answer:
The Garland family Christmas tree lacks a light bulb and it would not work without it. The owner really decorated the tree in a hurry and did not check if the lights were working or not, but the neighbor said they were singing "around the colorful tree that was shining".
