How bad does impulsivity make your relationship?

How bad does impulsivity make your relationship?

People tend to think that impulsivity always destroys a relationship, but this is not exactly the case. Studies have shown that impulsivity does not always make a relationship bad, it can sometimes make you happier, but only if the partners are both impulsive.

When it comes to choosing a restaurant or place to go on vacation, some people tend to be pushed by a decision of the moment. For what happened this is very good, but for his partner not always.

The partner probably wants to have the time needed to look at all the options before making the choice. This could cause controversy between the couple and is the case when impulsivity does not help a couple.

The study published in the Journal of Research in Personality, spontaneity and how much you and your partner cope with it, are important in a relationship. In fact it is true that the more different you and your partner are in terms of impulsivity, the lower the satisfaction in a relationship will be. But if you unite when it comes to living in the moment, chances are you will be very happy in this relationship.

In this study, researchers considered a series of self-reported impulsive behaviors from different couples. They then put this data against three hypotheses: First, if only one of the partners was impulsive, the quality of the relationship would not be good; Second, if both partners were impulsive, the quality of their relationship would be positively affected; and thirdly the more different the partners were in terms of impulsivity, the worse the quality of the relationship will be.

If we take the case where a couple where both partners were impulsive, when there were problems, during heated debates, they would react the same. They exploded on the spot without thinking of the long-term consequences. This study showed that partners who have the same style (act now, think later) are more compatible and perhaps even happier than other couples where one person acts in a hurry while the other does not.
