The 50-year-old novelist and philanthropist, who was previously married to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is continuing to keep the promises she made by signing The Giving Pledge last year.
Giving Pledge is a non-profit organization through which wealthy individuals pledge to donate at least half of their wealth throughout their lives.
This latest series of donations will support 384 organizations in all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and Washington DC, at a time when many Americans are struggling financially after the coronavirus outbreak.
According to a blog post by Scott, some of these financial gifts have gone towards supporting food banks, emergency aid funds and support services for people in need.
Others have moved towards addressing long-term systemic inequalities that have been exacerbated by the crisis, including debt relief, employment training, and so on.
Other areas where funds were concentrated included education, legal protection groups for those receiving institutional discrimination, and so on.
Scott wrote:
"This pandemic has been devastating in the lives of Americans. Economic losses and health outcomes have been worse for women, for people of color, and for people living in poverty. "Meanwhile, it has significantly increased the wealth of billionaires."
She concluded her blog post, encouraging readers to donate:
"The hope you nurture with your gift is likely to nurture your own hope."
