A new analysis reviewing 54 studies in over 20 countries found that homes where someone was sick with Covid continued to be hotspots for transmitting the virus, even if overall community spread was declining.
"This is another study that reminds us how contagious the virus that causes Covid-19 is and how difficult it is to avoid infecting others if you live in a crowded, multi-generational home," the CNN medical analyst said. , Dr. Leana Wen.
Spouses were at higher risk than other family members, due to sleeping in the same room, intimacy and prolonged contact, according to a study published Monday in the journal JAMA Network Open .
The risk was higher if the family member showed symptoms of Covid-19, such as cough, sneezing, body aches, fever, than in cases where he showed little or no signs of the virus.
A recent study by the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) found that infection among household members occurs quickly.
According to researchers, more than half of the people (53%) living with someone fighting Covid-19 became infected within a week.
About 75% of these secondary infections occurred within five days of the first symptoms in the initial patient.
Less than half of the infected family members had symptoms at the time the infection was first detected.
Isolate yourself or your loved ones!
Staying isolated from other household members is challenging, especially if you are in a small space or have children at home.
"If you have someone at home who is older or has a health problem that consequently makes them less immune to the disease, you will need to isolate that person so that children and everyone else are not around regularly." says the pediatrician, Dr. Tanya Altmann.
If you live alone, your challenge is to monitor your symptoms and take care of yourself when you are not feeling well. Make sure you have a plan in place to get food and medicine into your home and find someone who can be responsible for regular virtual check-ups.
Save or ask your relatives to provide you with all possible entertainment tools: iPad, books, and even games you can play through FaceTime or Skype.
