September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, open discussion, and breaking social stereotypes about mental health and suicide.

Every year, more than 720,000 people commit suicide worldwide. Each loss is incalculable, deeply affecting families, friends, colleagues and entire communities.

Changing the narrative around suicide
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024–2026 is "Changing the narrative around suicide." The goal? To break the silence, reduce stigma, and foster an environment where people feel safe to talk about their feelings and seek help. This year, the World Health Organization's message is clear: "Changing the narrative around suicide."

Changing the narrative is not only about social attitudes, but also about the need for systemic changes: preventive policies, access to quality mental health care, information, and strengthening communities.

Read below on how you can manage intense and charged emotions, according to the World Health Organization.

If you feel like you can't take it anymore

Feelings of inadequacy, internal pressure and loss of meaning are difficult experiences. The most important thing is not to go through them alone. Help is available, if you ask for it. In Albania, there are contact lines of various centers that offer free psychological assistance.

Ask for help, you are not alone.

Open discussion can save lives. If you or someone you know needs support, reach out to mental health professionals. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Suicidal thoughts are often the result of psychological distress that can be recognized, prevented, and treated. The first step is understanding and empathy for others and ourselves.

How to take care of your mental health in everyday life

WHO suggests small, practical actions that can make a difference:

Talk to someone you trust. A text, a phone call, a meeting can help you feel less lonely.

Move , even a walk helps. Physical activity improves mood, relieves stress, and activates the brain.

Do something that makes you happy. A hobby, a favorite series, some music. All of these give yourself space to rediscover the meaning of life in the little things.

Rest . Rest is a necessity, not a luxury. Learn to stop when you need to.

Note: You are never alone, there are always people who want to help and listen!
