A Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft photographed the world’s largest iceberg as it flew over the Atlantic Ocean.
The 4,200-square-kilometer mass, called the A68a, was toward the southern island of Georgia. Due to its size, it was impossible to photograph the entire iceberg, but the research provided "close-up" views of the surrounding waters which will be studied by observers and scientists.
Scientists said there is a possibility that the iceberg may remain in shallow water in Georgia, posing a threat to the island's ecosystem. The A68a has traveled 1,050 km in the three years since it broke away from the Larsen C ice block in Antarctica.
